Brian W. Hammock joins Alexander & Cleaver as the firm’s Managing Attorney of the Government Relations practice. Brian has been a trusted advisor to Maryland’s top elected officials and business leaders over the past two decades. He has served as lead executive in the MidAtlantic for a Fortune 250 company, as a senior advisor to the Governor of the State of Maryland, a strong advocate for his clients at Maryland’s largest law firm, and as a sought-after advisor in countless elections at the federal, state, and local levels including on-the-ground legislative, budget, and procurement lobbying.
Brian is no stranger to Alexander & Cleaver, making this a coming home of sorts. Brian cut his teeth in Annapolis working for A&C during the 2003 legislative session. Brian went on to work for then Baltimore City Mayor Martin O’Malley and during O’Malley’s governorship. Brian served as a senior advisor to Maryland’s Governor on a range of matters from legislative to transportation, energy, environment, and the budget.
After receiving his law degree from the University of Baltimore, Brian joined Venable LLP where he quickly became an attorney that clients could trust to navigate matters at all levels of government. He advised clients on state procurement, the state regulatory process, local land use matters, and the regulation of federal and state financial institutions. This was in addition his busy practice representing some of Maryland’s largest employers in litigation before Maryland’s courts and administrative boards.
Most recently Brian has served as the Resident Vice President for CSX Transportation in the Mid-Atlantic. As CSX’s lead executive in the region, Brian worked closely with industrial-sector businesses to secure federal and state funding for infrastructure projects, promote more favorable regulation, and to defeat damaging legislation, providing government relations advice and serving as a lobbyist.
Brian is a member of the Leadership Maryland class of 2017 and was named a 2016 Most Admired CEO by The Daily Record. He serves on the board of directors for the Center for Urban Families and the Baltimore Industrial Group. Brian is a past board member of the Central Maryland Transportation Alliance, South Baltimore Business Alliance, Baltimore City Stormwater Advisory Board, Canton Railroad Company, Maryland Historical Society, and the Governor’s Task Force on Sustainable Growth and Wastewater Disposal. He is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.
