Within a week of joining Alexander & Cleaver in February 2007, Hannah Powers recruited National Popular Vote, a non-profit, to seek government relations assistance from our firm. National Popular Vote works with individual states to reform presidential election-from the Electoral College to direct popular vote. Halfway through the legislative session, with the bill stuck in a drawer in a Senate Committee, Hannah led the firm's efforts to engage Senate and House leadership as well as members of the executive branch to create support for this legislation. A few weeks later, after numerous front-pages stories on the subject, Maryland was the first State in the nation to pass popular vote legislation and Governor O'Malley proudly signed the bill into law.
Since coming to Alexander & Cleaver, Hannah heads up legislative issues related to energy, gaming and business relations. Her record of success with legislative issues has worked well for firm clients as she leverages her knowledge of issues with her institutional understanding of how to get things done in Annapolis.
Prior to joining the firm, Hannah worked for Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. where she was Miller's liaison to the Senate Finance Committee focusing on health care and corporate regulatory intricacies effecting Maryland's business community. Hannah calls Senator Miller a wonderful mentor and the man who gave her a start in Maryland politics. She represented Senator Miller throughout the state at community events and meetings and worked with members of his leadership on issues before the full Senate.
Hannah has also been active in Democratic political campaigns, working for candidates in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2006. A native of Anne Arundel County, she resides in Annapolis, MD.
